Wanted: 2009 Tour of the Fireflies Marshals

You may have heard about the annual Tour of the Fireflies, that one day in Metro Manila when traffic comes to a crawl because of the hundreds of cyclists on the road. It is a statement that aims, among other things, to advocate clean air and the use of bicycles.

This year, mark April 19 on your calendar. If you are planning to go out on that day, being a family day, expect heavy traffic. If you have no plans yet, mark that day and join the Tour of the Fireflies. It would be great if you are a cyclist and ride a bike regularly. You can apply to be a ToF marshal.

The 11 Tour of the Fireflies will [be held] on April 19, 2009 and will start and end in Tiendesitas. From 500++ riders in 1999, it has grown to 5,000++ bicycle riders in 2008(10th TOF MMDA estimates). 

The success of the TOF and its increasing number of participants has been partly due the fun atmosphere it has always adhered to, and by the safety and help that the TOF volunteer bike marshals brings. 100++ bikers who go through 4-6 Sundays of training.

Riders who give their time, energy, presence and heart to help not just the Tour, but to the thousands of participants who join the ToF every year. From the 5 year old kid on trainer wheels, to the 90 year old biker from Valenzuela.

Maybe you'd like to contribute more to the promotion of bicycling, a sport and activity we all love. Maybe you'd like to give a little more action on your green and environmental lifestyle commitments and advocacy. 

Join us and be a volunteer bike marshal for the 11th Tour of the Fireflies. Marshal training rides are on March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 6. Marshals should complete a minimum of 3 training rides.
